3 Useful Websites to save your Favorites or Bookmarks Online

Posted on 7:10 AM by Unknown
When you constantly move from computer to computer be it from home to office or to your phones browser or at the library the constant that stays in place is that you are probably always going to the same websites most of them time. Sure you can save your bookmarks in an html word file and carry them around on a USB flash drive with you or save them online in an email but there is another way.

There are a plethora of different internet sites that provide ways to save your bookmarks online but in this article I am going to describe some of the sites I have tested and tried and use frequently and give you instructions on how to set up bookmarks on each one.

Google Bookmarks
One of my favorite online sites is iGoogle. You must have a Google account in order to access iGoogle but once you do it is a simple thing to make yourself a home page that contains all of your favorites/bookmarks as well as favorite newsfeeds and applets. Go to http://www.google.com/ig and click on sign in up in the right and corner and sign in on the next page using your Google username and password. If you do not have one you can create one by clicking on the link that reads "Create an account now". You will need a current email address to set up the account but the form is fairly simple. You can use Google for all of your needs like for email with Gmail and editing and sending pictures with Picasas. Once you have a Google Id you have access to all of these great features. Look here for all of the cool free Google services available to you.

So now that you have a Google ID go to the above iGoogle page link click on Sign in, up in the right hand corner and enter in your Google username and password on the next page. You will be logged into iGoogle and are now ready to set up your iGoogle page.
You can add all sorts of things to your iGoogle page but I am only going to describe how to set up bookmarks/favorites here.

On your page you will see a link in the upper right part of the screen that reads "Add Stuff" like in the picture above. Click on that. Then in the search for gadgets box on the right top of the page, like in the picture below, type in the word Bookmarks and click on the search button.
The first result you get will be for the Google Bookmarks Gadget and look something like below. Click on the Add it now button to get it into your iGoogle page.

Now click the back to iGoogle home link in the upper left part of the page to get back to your iGoogle page. You will now see at the top of your iGoogle page the bookmarks gadget for you to start entering in and saving your bookmarks. Just click on add bookmarks and you can start creating a list of all or your Favorites/Bookmarks that will always be available to you on the iGoogle website at http://www.google.com/ig once you have added them in.

My Yahoo
I like the way Yahoo handles bookmarks/favorites quite a bit. You do need to sign up for a Yahoo account but once you do it is quite simple to get your bookmarks going. First go to http://my.yahoo.com/ You don't really need a Yahoo account to customize the page but you won't be able to move from workstation to workstation or add bookmarks if you don't set one up. Once you have a Yahoo account sign in at the My Yahoo page and click on the +Add Content button in the top left of the screen. We are again going to type in the word Bookmarks in the searchbox in the upper right of the screen and click on the magnifying glass to search.

Above is an albeit fuzzy image of what you will see as a result. The first choice on the left will be Bookmarks, click on that icon to add it and then click on the yellow I'm Done button on the bottom left. You will now have the Bookmarks Gadget on your My Yahoo page and can go about adding bookmarks to it by clicking the Add Bookmark link. You can import your current bookmarks from Internet Explore and Firefox by clicking on Manage at the top of the Bookmark applet and then Tools in the upper right part of the blue bar on the following page. Follow the instructions to import your bookmarks into your My Yahoo.

Delicious.com
Delicious.com is a social bookmarking web site that allows you to add a gadget right on to your Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox toolbar to add bookmarks as well as add them online. You certainly can't add the gadget to public computers but can do it on your home computer. Go to the signup page for Delicious at https://secure.delicious.com/register and fill out the form. You will them be able to go to the login page and get started bookmarking! Once on the Delicious bookmark screen you can import your current bookmarks. In the upper right of the screen click on the Settings Link. Click on the "Import\Upload Bookmarks" link and follow the instructions on the following pages to upload your bookmarks to Delicious. Click the "Bookmarks" tab at the top of the page to see your bookmarks. Click on "Save a new bookmark" in the upper right of the page to create your own and add a new bookmark to your page. You can create categories and sort and search through your bookmarks. Check the help pages for tips on how to best use Delicious at http://delicious.com/help Click the Home tab at the top of the page to see some of the most popular sites other users of Delicious are bookmarking and which ones are the most populr. While browsing the web you might see the Delicious logo at the bottom of articles or on blogs. You can click the delicious link while logged into delicious to add the page to your bookmarks.

While Delicious is probably the most popular and most used, About.com has a good list of 9 other Social Bookmarking sites out there on the web you can try out at: http://websearch.about.com/od/bestwebsites/tp/freebookmarks.htm

And here is a link to a blog at Mashable who has 50+ social bookmarking sites!
http://mashable.com/2007/08/08/social-bookmarking-2/

Now social bookmarking sites are not the same as say Yahoo or Google bookmarks but they are useful alternatives. Some sites require a lot more work than others. You just need to find one you like and stick with it. With social bookmarking sites you have the benefit of users ranking web sites as to their usefulness so it helps you weed out ones that are most helpful.

One of the social bookmarking sites I recently came across that appears to be fairly new is http://www.yattle.com/ .
Simple to sign up for an account, respond to confirmation email and you are ready to login and start creating bookmarks. There is a microblogging feature on this site like Twitter also.
The site claims to be in its alpha stages so tread lightly.

That is one of thing that scares me about all of these social bookmarking sites. Some come and go rather quickly. That is why it is important to back up your bookmarks to a USB Flash Key drive every so often (hopefully the site you choose allows exporting of your bookmarks) in case the unforeseeable happens and the web site disappears. That is probably not going to happen with Google, Yahoo, or Delicious (the three I mention above) but always err on the side of caution.

Internet Explorer 8 will probably break websites but has compatibility view to "fix" the problem.

Posted on 11:11 AM by Unknown
The hits just keep on coming. Many websites will break when Microsoft releases Internet Explorer 8 out to the world very soon.

By the end of 2009 it will be on Millions of computers.

One of the features Microsoft has added is called “Compatibility View” which will help show those pages which do not conform to the new standards. You will be able to download a list of not compatible sites from Microsoft into your browser (a pain) so that they show in compatility view.

Something else IT will eventually inevitably have to manage. Sigh… for more info see here:

ajaxWindows YAWOS (Yet Another Web OS)

Posted on 4:24 PM by Unknown
Well I have written about a few of the "cloud" type Web OS tools out there including G.ho.st and Windows Live Mesh to name a few but today I would like to tell you about AjaxWindows. AjaxWindows is a project funded by Michael Robertson of MP3.com, Linspire(aka Lindows) and Mp3tunes.com fame. AjaxWindows is an online full desktop that includes word processor, email client, IP telephony with an app called Gizmocall, instant messaging and more. Ajax Windows is best run under Firefox but can be run under Internet Explorer once an active X control is installed.

As its name implies ajaxWindows uses javascript so you must have that enabled within your browser in order to run it.

ajaxWindows does not contain a built in browser, rather it uses an application launcher to use your local machines browser. This makes sense because you can't use the program in the first place if you haven't got a browser installed on your computer.

The site uses something called SyncWizard which will help you Sync your files and mobile phone, pda and even your Amazon Kindle info up to your online ajaxWindows desktop.

You can sign up for an account at the below URL:
http://www.ajaxwindows.com/apps/windows/content/index.html

Here is a demo video of Ajax Windows.

Download Pick: PowerGui - A graphical user interface and script editor for PowerShell.

Posted on 7:00 AM by Unknown
Hello All,
Here is a great FREE utility to get you started learning and using Windows Powershell. The utility is called PowerGui and it is an extensible graphical administrative console and IDE for managing systems based on Windows PowerShell.

What is really cool is that PowerGui has built a pretty large following and community and already there are many contributions of what they call PowerPacks that are prebuilt consoles for things like Active Directory, Terminal Services, Hyper-V and yes even Citrix!

So here are a few links to get you started:
You can download PowerGUI from here:
http://powergui.org/downloads

Once you download and install PowerGui you can download and add the community created PowerPacks
There is a Terminal Services PowerPack you can get from here:
http://powergui.org/entry.jspa?externalID=2071&categoryID=296
This PowerPack allows basic administration of Termial Servers (view settings, permissions, enable/disable connections), RDP sessions (message, connect to, disconnect) and RDP connections (launch, edit settings).

There is one for the Citrix Console available at this link:
http://www.powergui.org/entry%21default.jspa?categoryID=296&externalID=2033
This is a pretty cool thing, you can logoff specific users, view printer, hotfixes, enable or disable apps and more. It would be excellent start to create a console for your help desk.

And one for Hyper-V here!
http://powergui.org/entry.jspa?externalID=2142&categoryID=290

There is quite a library of Powerpacks in categories such as Active Directory, Exchange, Windows Server, Reporting and more!
You can search through them here:
http://www.powergui.org/kbcategory.jspa?categoryID=21

What is really cool is once you load the power packs there is a tab that lets you see what the powershell script is doing in the background.

Download Pick: Xenapp Web Interface 5.01 Paint by Number Kit - Pimp My Xenapp

Posted on 5:09 AM by Unknown
For those of you who have installed Citrix Xenapp Web Interface 5.01 you will find that Citrix has changed a lot of the file structure and made a whole lot more of the interface javascript.

The Xenapp Web interface 5.0 SDK has some instructions in it on how to make some changes and do things but unless you are a developer or programmer it reads like a knitting instruction manual looks like to an auto mechanic.

Anyhow Citrix has offered a Paint by Number kit on their Pimp my Xenapp site.
Check it out here:

http://community.citrix.com/display/xa/PimpMyXenApp

When I started playing around trying to figure out where things are I realizedthat the WI Access management console makes most all of its changes in the WebInterface.conf file located in:
C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\Citrix\AccessPlatform\conf\WebInterface.conf

I like the black interface and really the only thing I wanted to do is just put a few links across the top of apps screen of the web inteface. So here is a brief tutorial of how I did it.
Navigate to the above conf directory and make a backup copy of the Webinterface.conf file. Right click on the file and choose edit or open and open the file in Notepad. Go to edit in Notepad choose find and put in Appwelcome.
It will take you to the following line:

AppWelcomeMessage_en=

Now all you need to do is write some html code like in the below text box to include your links and add it after the = sign after AppWelcome message

Save the file and you should be done.
The above code would give you three links across the to of the apps page. The "nbsp " will put a space between the links. You will want to add the target="new" tag at the end of your url to make the links open in a new window or they will open in the same window and close your web interface. If you have workspace control enabled that will also close all of your users open apps!
Anyways here is what the finished product across the top would look like.
eTime Timecard Library Intranet Library Home Page

No neeed to stop and restart IIS after editing the Webinterface.conf file just a refresh of your apps page you can see the changes.

My upgrade of Citrix Presentation Server Web Interface 4.5 to Xenapp Web Interface 5.01

Posted on 5:19 PM by Unknown
Hi All,
Just wanted to pass along my experience today of upgrading our external Citrix web interface from Citrix Presentation Server 4.5 to XenApp 5.01.

For the most part I was pleasantly suprised with the ease of it and how well it went. I am still figuring out some of the new file structures and customizations but I will pass those tidbits along as I figure them out.
I started by downloading the Citrix Xenapp 5.01 Web interface file from Mycitrix.com which is buried under Xenapp 5 server on the Citrix Site. You will need a mycitrix.com login in order to download the free Web Interface 5.01 file. You can try this link after you login:
http://www.citrix.com/English/SS/downloads/details.asp?downloadID=1681219&productID=-1
I then made a backup copy of my program files\citrix folder and my Inetpub\www folder just in case things went terribly wrong.

Needless to say the documentation for 5.1 was rather lacking. There was a paragraph in the XA 5 admin guide saying you could upgrade from 4.5 to 5 but good luck finding anything else out there. So I gave it a whirl, I closed all apps on the server stopped the antivirus and my WI website in IIS and ran the WI 5.01 executable. It immediately crapped out because it did not find the Xenapp 5.01 console installed on the server. So I had to go back out to MyCitrix and find the Web Interface Console installation files.

After some searching I finally pegged them down. I downloaded and had to unzip them to run the executable. It was called the Web Interface 5.01 Console Extension on the web site. I found it at
http://www.citrix.com/English/SS/downloads/details.asp?downloadId=1681221&productId=186

I ran the Console installation, nexted through it with defaults and all seemed well.

Next I ran the WI installation executable. I chose defaults on all that and nexted through the prompts. Went back to IIS restarted my website and restarted my antivirus and jumped on another machine to see how it looked. Well WI came up and it is a simple black login screen. So I ran the WI console and went through the choices, played around a little bit and made some modifications. This version of WI doesn't use the include files in the same way as 4.5 and has a little bit different directory structure but the new version of the console setup for the website does allow for some additional configurations of color and html links in it. This weekend I will poke around the Web Interface 5.01 SDK that was recently released on the Citrix Site to see what I need to do to get my headers and footers back and pretty it up, but the site is running just fine.

It was an easy upgrade, no problems except for the console surprise. WI 5 seems to load the apps faster and I tested it out on my Tmobile dash to see if it detects the mobile version and it indeed does. Now I just got to get the ICA client working on my dash and I can have my office with me in my pocket wherever I go!

New Windows IT Pro ITTV Video Using TS Easy Print to Redirect Printer In Terminal Services

Posted on 4:58 AM by Unknown
In the latest edition of Windows IT Pro magazine newsletter one item caught my eye. The group is creating a video site for IT Pros called ITTV. IT Pros can upload their IT related videos to the site ala YouTube.

One video I came across that might interest some here is one by John Savill on how to use Easy Print to redirect a printer in Terminal Services.
http://www.ittv.net/VideoPlayer/tabid/57/VideoId/215/Using-TS-Easy-Print-To-Redirect-Printers-In-Terminal-Services.aspx

One thing that would be useful and that is currently lacking is a link to embed videos in blogs. Hopefully that will come.

The site is having a video contest called "If I ran Microsoft" encouraging you to upload a video of yourself saying what you would do if you ran Microsoft. Lets see, Fix Vista, Fix Vista, Fix Vista....lol

Enter your video here:

Download Pick: Bayden Slickrun

Posted on 10:35 AM by Unknown
If you are like me when I am on my PC I like to use shortcuts and get things done as quickly as possible with the least amount of typing. I was searching on some Vista command line commands and happened across a slick.. (literally) FREE program called SlickRun by a company called Bayden Systems.

What SlickRun does is put a small command box above the clock on your system try you can type commands into. The box can be moved anywhere on your screen. While it may not look like much at first, SlickRun is a powerful little free tool worth having a go around with. After you download and install Slickrun you will see a box like the below image:

The power of SlickRun comes in with a feature they call Magic Words. Magic Words allow you to turn any common word into a command that will run a program when you type it into SlickRun command window. So for example you could set up Outlook email to come up if you just typed Mail into Slickrun. Or Internet Explorer to come up if you just typed IE. You can also type create Magic Words for full website urls so say for example you wanted to go to FoxNews web site you could put the url to it into SlickRun and assign the word Fox to it. Typing in Fox would bring up an IE (or FireFox or whatever browser you want of choice) window with the Fox news website.
Say you want to make a quick Magic Word for active directory users and computers. Just pick your magic word, I used ADU and add in the shortcut to the AD users control panel into the setup (%SystemRoot%\system32\dsa.msc), save it and off you go! Typing ADU into the SlickRun command line immediately brings it up!!
One thing I did not like about Slickrun was the sounds it made. There was no choice in the program to disable the sounds but I quickly corrected that problem by going to the program files\SlickRun folder and renaming the 3 .wav files to something else. No more sounds!
You can download the latest version and read more about SlickRun at the following URL: http://www.bayden.com/SlickRun/

While on the Bayden site you will definitely want to check out the many other free utilities they offer at http://www.bayden.com/Other/

Fixing Applications in Vista when you use Roaming or Mandatory Profiles

Posted on 9:54 AM by Unknown
Windows Vista uses a new directory structure in the users profile for application data. Instead of the folder being called Application Data as in Windows 2000 - Windows XP Microsoft renamed it AppData and created a redirect shortcut to it. (and the profiles are under Users instead of Documents and Settings of course) To further confuse things Microsoft created 3 subfolders under AppData called Local, Roaming and LocalLow.

The confusion and problems arise with roaming and mandatory profiles when you install an application and it puts its data in the LocalLow folder. You see the LocalLow folder can NEVER roam! You can't redirect it either! This was Microsofts way of speeding up profile loading but it created a big headache for system admins. Yes the application data in the locallow folder may have a lot of files and slow down profile loading but in order for a user to move from machine to machine you sorta kinda need them. Duh!

Our problem was with ADP Etime. It used an older version of Java and put the Jar Files into the Locallow folder. If you use a mandatory profile users would have to download the Jar files at every login to the etime app and would have to wait 10 minutes each time for them to download from ADP. (note this doesn't happen for local users because their profile doesn't get overwritten and the locallow folder and its contents remain on the workstation.)
Further if you moved from PC to PC you would have to download the adp Jar files every time you logged in. I came up with the idea to copy the Java Jar files out to a folder on the users hard disk of their workstation and then use robocopy to copy the Jar files into the locallow folder when the user logged in.

This problem is not specific to Adp Etime or Jav either, it happens with flash, quicktime and all sorts of other Internet Explorer Plug Ins!

Anyways I copied the etime Jar files to a folder called Sun on the users C: drive of their workstation and then put the following robocopy command in a text file and saved it as a .cmd file. I placed the .cmd file in the users startup folder of their profile.

robocopy c:\sun "C:\Users\%username%\AppData\Locallow\sun" /e

(note command should all be on one line)

This one copies the SUN folder I put in the C: drive to the users locallow folder creating the sun directory and all subdirectories as needed.

You could do this from a network drive using a UNC

robocopy \\Fileserver\sun "C:\Users\library2\AppData\Locallow\sun" /e

(note command should all be on one line)
This command would copy the SUN folder from the Fileserver onto the workstation. Note the user MUST have access to the share on the file server though.

Microsoft actually did something right by making the Robocopy command native in Windows Vista! You don't have to go out looking for it or download it.

It is a simple work around I know but a necessary one if you want to use roaming or mandatory profiles on Windows VIsta and maintain downloaded JAR files or browser plugin installations across workstations. All you need do is substitute the Sun folder in the above command with the folders you need to replicate like Quicktime and Adobe and put those folders in an accesible place.

The Internet Connection TestingTool and enabling ECN in Windows Vista

Posted on 6:48 AM by Unknown
I am alway looking for ways to speed up my PC and my internet connectivity. Being on Windows Vista has made life interesting. I happened upon the online Microsoft Internet Connection Tool. (ICT)

The ICT is a nifty tool that only runs on Windows Vista, and is mostly only for home networks though, to test your network and router and tell you what networking features your router supports. One feature it tested that I haven't had time to really look into or read about that is only in Vista and 2008 is called Explicit Congestion Notification. (ECN) The ICT report suggested under the Network Congestion portion that I turn ECN on to help speed up my connectivity.

I'm not quite sure I understood it correctly as to whether it was required at both endpoints (server and workstation) aka peers, or just within the router though, but I turned it on anyways after a little research. Now I am not advocating you do the same here, your mileage may vary and your network may not support it but here is more info anyways.

I came across a document at Microsoft outlining the new networking features of Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008. It is definitely worth taking the time to read it if you are able. So here is what this article says about ECN:

"When a TCP segment is lost, TCP assumes that the segment was lost due to congestion at a router and performs congestion control, which dramatically lowers the TCP sender’s transmission rate. With Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) support (RFC 3168) on both TCP peers and the routers in the routing infrastructure, routers experiencing congestion mark the packets as they forward them. TCP peers receiving marked packets lower their transmission rate to ease congestion and prevent segment losses. Detecting congestion before packet losses are incurred increases the overall throughput between TCP peers. Windows Server 2008 and Windows Vista support ECN, but it is disabled by default. "

Ok, makes sense. How do I turn it on?

The article describes how you can enable ECN but not entirely correctly.

You must open an elevated command prompt and type:

netsh interface tcp set global ecncapability=enabled

(rerun the command changing enabled to disabled if something happens or you experience strange behavior and you need to turn ECN off)
You can verify the command worked by typing the following in the command prompt:
netsh int tcp show global

The article left off the fact that the command must be run from an elevated command prompt. (The easiest way to open an elevated command prompt in Vista is from the start menu. Go to accessories, command prompt and right click on it and choose run as administrator from the pop up context menu. )
The image on the left shows how to select the run as administrator to elevate the command prompt.

There is also a link at the end of the article to a 2006 article by "The Cable Guy" that is a pretty good in depth explanation of how ECN works. Check it out here:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb878122.aspx
For more things you can do with the Netsh command read this article.

Now I have noticed at least one anomally after turning ECN on though. For some reason I cannont access http://www.southwest.com/ website. I don't know if other websites have this problem. I turned off ECN and I could get there. Weird.

Preventing Adobe Flash, Shockwave and Adobe Acrobat Reader from AutoUpdating

Posted on 8:30 AM by Unknown
When you set up mandatory profiles for your users or you want to limit access on a computer that is a locked down workstation one of the greatest frustrations are programs that inject their own autoupdate feature and constantly go out and check and try to install updates whether you want them or not. Then when users without proper access try to load the updates they fail and get frustrated prompting a help desk call. Adobe Flash, Acrobat Reader and Shockwave are such culprits.

Fortunately there IS a way for administrators to place a file on the users hard disk that will let you disable the autoupdate feature of Adobe Flash. I found a KB article on the Adobe website which explains how to create a file called mms.cfg that can be dropped in the Flash folder on the users hard disk that will stop the autoupdate prompting. (note user who have access can disable autoupdate via the interface. This link has instructions.)

To create the file simply open up Notepad and create a line that reads as follows:

AutoUpdateDisable=1

Use Save as to save the file with the name MMS.cfg as UTF-8 format

To deploy use AD or SMS or some other management tool for your network to Copy the mmd.cfg file out to your workstations to the Windows\System32\macromed\flash folder for versions of Adobe Flash 8 and above and to the Windows\System32 folder for previous versions of flash.

There are many more settings for the mms.cfg file for administrators to manipulate how flash reacts and they can be found on page 22 of the following Adobe Manual:

http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flashplayer/articles/flash_player_8_security.pdf
And for Adobe Shockwave use this link at the Adobe site that explains how you disable autoupdate for Adobe Shockwave via the interface. http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=tn_16683

While I am at it I will point out how to disable AutoUpdate on Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is a little more convoluted though. The AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat is the file you need to edit that determines updates and it is in the users profile located at:
%username%\Local Settings\Application Data\Adobe\Updater5\

Open the AdobeUpdatePrefs.dat file in notepad and look for the following lines:
To disable the updates for Adobe Acrobat Reader change the value from 1 to 0. If the lines do not exist in the file you could certainly add them.

Download Pick: ResSwitch Change Screen Resolution via shortcut or command line in Windows Vista and Windows XP

Posted on 11:29 AM by Unknown
Recently we have started upgrading our staff's computers to ones that have Vista on them with 17 inch versus 15 inch monitors. Well the elder generation complained about the higher screen resolution that the monitors now have being they are bigger.

Since we use a single mandatory profile for logins and users then log into Citrix for their apps I needed a way to easily let the users change their resolution. We run shifts so different users use the same workstation and all want a different resolution.

I had a program that was able to change the screen resolution on our Windows 2000 workstations but it did not work on Vista. Go figure. So I set out to find one that did and finally found ResSwitch formerly named Qres by Naughter Software. The beauty of this utility of course is that it is FREE. My favorite price.

So I downloaded the Qres.zip file and extracted it. I copied the file ResSwitch.exe from the Release folder from the Qres directory I extracted it to into the C: root folder of the users drive. Then I created 3 icons which I copied over to the desktop folder of the users profile called 800x600, 1024x768 and 1280x1024.

For the 800x600 screen resolution icon I created a new shortcut with the target as follows:

C:\ResSwitch.exe /WIDTH:800 /HEIGHT:600

The 1024x768 screen resolution target line in the shortcut should look like this:
C:\ResSwitch.exe /WIDTH:1024 /HEIGHT:768

Finally I made one for 1280x1024 that had the below for the target in the shortcut:

C:\ResSwitch.exe /WIDTH:1280 /HEIGHT:1024

That is all there was to it! Now I had 3 icons on the users desktop that they could easily change the resolution with a simple mouse click. (note you have to click run to bypass UAC to run it)

You can download ResSwitch from this link:

http://www.naughter.com/qres.html

Note: Of course this program will work in Windows XP Also

Apple got to hand it to you when you are right you are right! Vista needs fixing.

Posted on 3:56 PM by Unknown
Well I have ranted to Microsoft on many occasions even sent an email to Ballmer, Gates and company, that instead of spending $300 million in advertising that they should use that money to send out developers to engage software vendors to fix their software on Vista. Someone at Apple must of read my rants and came up with this clever commercial which is 100% accurate and very funny! Fix Vista. Microsofts response, No we will rename it to Windows 7 and make the V word go away and maybe people won't figure it out that it is really Vista SR 2 with a new name.

So first there is the money part:

And then the V Word one which caps it off:

All I can say is if I'm a PC and yeah I liked the campaign but if I can see the writing on the wall Microsoft... why the hell can't you? Can you PLEASE PLEASE just help get software developers some assistance on getting their stuff to work on Vista, Windows 7 or whatever the hell you want to call it this week.
The Bake sale is on:

Download Pick: MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD Rom

Posted on 3:08 PM by Unknown
Since Microsoft has started making all of their OS downloads and programs ISO's and I have been using Virtualization to create VM's on my laptop I have grown to love MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD Rom.

MagicISO Virtual CD/DVD(MagicDisk) is a FREE utility that loads a TSR and lets you mount an ISO file as a Virtual Disk. So if you for example have the Windows XP SP3 OS ISO you can mount it virtually and then install it easily into a VM without having to burn a disc! Truly Magic!

There is also an ISO extractor that lets you extract the ISO to your hard disk.

You can download MagicDisc for free from here.

The company also makes a very neat for pay program called MagicISO Maker which allows you to create ISO files and also convert them. The combination of these two programs has almost eliminated my need to create CD/DVD's of my ISO files! No More Discs laying around! How green can you get?

Download Pick: Snippy for Windows XP Snipping Tool

Posted on 9:08 AM by Unknown
Update 8/2012: Recently the Snipping Tool Website disappeared from the web. I have provided a replacement download location for the tool on one of my servers see the link at the bottom of this article.  Sorry I do not have screen shots currently.

The Snipping Tool first introduced in Windows XP Tablet edition experience pack and now part of Windows Vista and Windows 7 is a useful tool to capture and copy a portion of your computer screen to paste into blogs and documents.

(note: To install snipping tool in Windows Vista go to the Control panel choose Programs and features, Click on Turn Windows Features on or off, check the box next to Tablet PC Optional Components in the popup. Click OK, once installed snipping tool will show up in your accesories folder.) The snipping tool is preinstalled and under Accessories folder in Windows 7 start menu.

It is a basic replacement for the Printscreen method of copying and pasting a screen which is not as granular and gives you a larger item when you paste it. I've seen lots of questions about how to get this functionality under the regular XP version. Snippy is the answer.

The free tool Snippy puts an icon of a pair of scissors in your task tray and when clicked on gives you a pencil cursor that you can use your mouse to trace around the area you want to clip and copy with a mouse click so you can paste it into any type of document. There is no installation required for Snippy, you just save the file and click on it to run. You can even just save it to your desktop so you can have it handy.

You can download Snippy from here. Note that it is an exe file and your browser may warn you about it. The file is safe and OK to download. You can save it directly to your desktop and run snippy.exe right from there.

Download Pick: Five Misunderstood Features of Windows Vista

Posted on 6:44 AM by Unknown
While companies continue to try to decide whether to adopt and deploy Windows Vista or just wait until Windows 7 it is important to know the features the OS offers and common misunderstandings so you can get the most out of your installation. Microsoft has provided an excellent document that addresses the five most often misunderstood features of Windows Vista which are:

• User Account Control
• Image management
• Display Driver Model
• Search
• 64 bit architecture

I would highly reccomend this document even to those who have already deployed Windows Vista.

Have a look at it at the following link: Five Misunderstood Features of Windows Vista.

Bink is reporting that Windows 7 will be called....

Posted on 4:46 AM by Unknown
Windows 7!!! A+ for originality there Microsoft Marketing. ; )

http://bink.nu/news/official-name-of-windows-7-revealed.aspx

Not to be confused with Windows Vista Service Pack 2 which is what it should be called because from what I have seen of Windows 7 it isn't a whole lot different than Vista.
Of course then they would have to offer it as an update and not be able to collect more money for an OS that the public doesn't wan't to adopt and programmers and software vendors seem to refuse to want to learn how to write their software to work with it.
Maybe they could extend XP out to 2020?

Look out Citrix Adobe beta testing ConnectNow

Posted on 7:24 AM by Unknown
In an apparent attempt to go after the remote live meeting market Adobe has released a beta of a product called ConnectNow.
Check it out at:

https://www.acrobat.com/#/connectnow/GoToMyMeeting

Think it is a coincidence that the last part of the link is GoToMyMeeting which is just too darn similar to Citrix's GoToMeeting?

I tested the service with a colleague earlier today and the screen sharing was very smooth. The program also allows you to share a webcam and has online chat. All in all a great job and very impressive! You can easily invite guests and Adobe gives you a permanent screen sharing URL for future meetings, something Citrix doesn't offer.

Gnu Guru- "Cloud Computing is a Trap"

Posted on 4:52 AM by Unknown
The Guardian has an article about Richard Stallman, founder of the Free Software Foundation and creator of the computer operating system GNU, feelings about cloud computing and they aren't warm and fuzzy. "It's stupidity. It's worse than stupidity: it's a marketing hype campaign," he told The Guardian.

I'm not going to venture that far out but I would have to tend to agree with Stallman for the most part. The cloud is a lot of hype right now. It is ASP marketing regurgitated in my opinion. This is an area I have watched and researched and tried to adopt now for many years.

We have a few hosted applications at my organization mostly HR and Payroll but critical line of business apps the data and machine stays in our data center. Yeah payroll sounds kind of critical but if the system goes you can always write a paper check locally.

Personally I am not too keen on paying someone for something (storage, email, etc) that I am already getting pretty much for free on my local machine or with free Internet applications like Yahoo Mail or Gmail.. Some of the Cloud OS projects like Microsoft Live Mesh, G.h.o.s.t., and Icloud, while compelling just aren't ready for prime time yet.

You can check out the article at the below link:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/2008/sep/29/cloud.computing.richard.stallman

Computerworld has written an article citing community bloggers comments on Stallman's opinions here:

http://blogs.computerworld.com/rms_hates_cloud_computing_says_you_should_too

Greg Ness posted in his blog that the Cloud needs a new Infrastructure 2.0 before it is a reality and also discusses the Virtualization hype. It is a must read article here:

http://gregness.wordpress.com/2008/09/30/the-cloud-will-need-infrastructure-20/

Finally Gartner recently released a good articel entitled "Why a Little Cloud hype might be useful" that is a must read at:

Mr. Carr was the keynote speaker this past year at Citrix Synergy and his message was that the internet (cloud) is becoming one big Utility driven by google. The book is a fascinating and great read and I would highly reccomend it for anyone in the computer industry.

Here is the video from the show it was a pretty funny exchange.

Download Pick: Microsoft Word 2007 Redaction Tool

Posted on 4:29 AM by Unknown
I picked this gem up from Tony Sonyo of Microsoft blog. Tony picked it up from the Microsoft Word Team blog who gives a good bit of information about just exactly what redaction can do for you here.

Law offices and personnel departments finding their offices plagued with requests for documents will find this tool indispensable. It basically lets you black out sensitive text in a word document.

The officially supported previous Word 2003 version of the redaction tool can be found here.

While Microsoft has not officially released a 2007 version of the Microsoft Word Redaction tool and are not supporting this you can now download the one the developers are working on Codeplex here:

http://www.codeplex.com/redaction/Release/ProjectReleases.aspx?ReleaseId=17177

UPDATE: Ok while the world didn't end, apparantly while the Hadron collider was running a huge 30 ton transformer blew. But that isn't all! While the particles were hurtling through the collider one of the computers controlling it was being hacked by a Greek group!

Download Pick: Servers Alive

Posted on 8:50 AM by Unknown
Here is my download pick of the week.
There are all sorts of monitoring solutions out there for alerting you as to when a resource is not available but one of my favorites is a program called Servers Alive by a company called Woodstone.

The program allows you to monitor your servers on a web page as well as send out email alerts when a server goes down. We use it to ping our branch routers and notify us if they go down. There are a lot of free add ons to the product. It is very easy to set up using the programs graphical input screens.

Woodstone offers a free unlimited trial of Servers Alive you can download from here:

http://www.woodstone.nu/salive/index.asp

This product came in very handy for us last evening during powerful windstorms to let us know which branches we could expect to have problems with this morning.

To purchase the product it is reasonably priced under $500 US($199 euro) for the enterprise edition however the free edition works great!
Here is a sample ouput of our web page from servers alive.

Status of hosts at last check

Brecksville DOWN since 4:06:46 AM, 9/15/2008
Maple Heights DOWN since 4:06:44 AM, 9/15/2008
Olmsted Falls DOWN since 4:06:43 AM, 9/15/2008
Warrensville DOWN since 4:06:46 AM, 9/15/2008
Bay Village RUNNING since 4:06:12 AM, 9/15/2008

We basically created a disrtibution list email with all of our admins on it called Serversalive in exchange and set it so it will send out updates when our routers bounce up and down. Here is sample text:

Warrensville is DOWN (0%)

New Microsoft video with Seinfield and gates

Posted on 1:23 PM by Unknown
OMG! Are they serious? Really? Really? This is not going to sell
anything. Not even remotely funny. The Microsoft
downward spiral continues.

Video: New Family
Look,
I am no MS Hater. I've been one of their biggest cheerleaderd since Dos 2.1, over 30 some years ago. It just REALLY irks me that they are spending this type of money to try to "improve" their image when really all they need to do is just engage the vendors and help show them how to write their programs and drivers work on Vista. Thats all. Seriously. Thats it. That is ALL they need to do.

I'm not finding any humor in the fact that I have 750 Vista PC's sitting here for over a year now that I can't deploy because every time I think I have a "golden image" another gotcha comes along with Vista that prevents me from implementation. ONE YEAR!!!

I thought woohoo, SP1 will come along and fix my problems. Boy was I wrong. The bottom line is Vista works great IF

A:) You are not on a domain using roaming or mandatory profiles.
B:) You are an administrator of your machine.

Otherwise the list of incompatabilites in programs and drivers is sickening. Blame it all you want on 3rd party vendors, but it is Microsoft's problem. And Bill Gates adjusting his shorts or doing the robot no matter how funny you find it, is not going to change peoples opinion of Microsoft when they have a computer in front of them causing maddening issues.

If this continues, no matter how bad they may be, I will be considering Macs or Linux for our next purchase, at least I know the programs I need to put on the local desktop on them will run. I can run the rest from Citrix

Citrix XenApp 5.0 Clients Available, XenApp 5 released to MyCitrix

Posted on 4:30 AM by Unknown
With the release of Xenapp 5 to the web,(get it in your MyCitrix) Citrix also has released several new client versions and yes once again has renamed them as promised at Citrix Synergy earlier this year.

First there is the Xenapp Plugin which is the new name for the Xenapp 11 client that was the new name for Citrix Presentation Server client that was the new name for the Citrix ICA Client.

That is split out into the Xenapp Web Plugin version 11(the ica web client) and the Xenapp Plugin for Streaming Apps version 11.

Find them all at http://www.citrix.com/clients

There were also two Access Management Console extensions posted earlier.
See
http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX118347
And
http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX118352

Here are some key talking points on XenApp 5.0 from Citrix:

XenApp 5 Highlights
Delivery of ALL Windows Applications
-
New inter-isolation communication capabilities simplify how virtual applications are packaged, maintained and updated, and ensure that the applications can interoperate as if they were installed locally.
-
Support for application streaming via HTTP and HTTPS provides more flexibility for application delivery.
User Experience 2.0
-
XenApp 5 includes a redesigned, intuitive and consistent user experience on the desktop and over the Web.
-
The ability to prioritize users and applications ensures the best experience for critical use cases.
Application Performance Monitoring and Support
-
Significantly expanded monitoring provides rich data into the user experience to enable faster and better assessments of performance issues.
-
New end user simulation tools allow administrators to proactively identify performance issues before they are experienced by end users. This capability allows IT organizations to track the performance of real-world end user tasks and measure their performance against service level commitments.
Support for Windows Server 2003 and 2008
-
XenApp 5 leverages the architectural enhancements in Windows Server® 2008 to improve security and manageability. For example, administrators will now be able to apply patches to Terminal Services without needing to reboot.
-
XenApp farms can now contain both Windows Server 2003 and 2008, allowing customers to begin migrating to Windows Server 2008 right away.

OPINION: It is time for Microsoft to start making nice with competing software vendors if they want to sell Vista. Save your $300 Million!

Posted on 5:18 AM by Unknown
This is my Opinion and does not reflect those of any of my employers. I have never been a Microsoft Basher (in fact I am probably one of their biggest champions over the last 25 years) But I am really fed up with the hype and also the infighting between Microsoft and other competing computer companies and this isn't going to sell me Vista. And since my MVP status was taken away I'm not going to hold back anymore. (not that I did when I was an MVP which is probably why they didn't pick me up again in the first place LOL)

NEWSFLASH TO MICROSOFT: Jerry Seinfield isn't going to help you sell more Vista licenses to Enterprises no matter how much you pay him. (and it is $10 million for those who care.) It is very funny to poke fun at other vendors, but I hate to tell you that Apple is spot on with most of it's Mac and PC commercials when it comes to the Enterprise.

I have been trying to roll out 700 Vista machines in our enterprise since last July (2007!) and at every corner I arrive at a new STOP sign that prevents me from doing it. Our organization requires several plugins and pieces of software from many vendors. These vendors deem their software Vista compatible but in reality they are only Vista compatible if the user is local and not on a domain or is an administrator.

And some of these programs, whether you turn off UAC, tell them to always run as administrator, put them in compatibility mode or whatever, still crash hard as soon as the user account is made a mandatory or roaming profile.

Companies like Adobe, Sun, ADP, Altiris, Symantec seem not to really care whether their software is fully compatible with Vista. I've had issues with every one of these companies getting one of their products to work on Microsofts Darling new OS.

Countless hours of my time have been wasted attempting to circumvent Vista's built in "security" just to get simple core applications (like Adobe Reader 9) to work in a domain environment. Sun only certifies the latest versions of Java to work with Vista and ADP whom refuses to update their applications like eTime to run properly with the latest version for example refuse to play. Time keeping is a critical thing here as our employees like to get paid.

There is a wonderful open source IM application that we are going to use called Spark to provide support to our customers. Worked fine for local user accounts but as soon as you put it into a roaming profile, bam, for some reason now you have to be an administrator to run it. Same for Adobe Acrobat 9 and countless other programs.

Every program has had a different solution in trying to get it to run in an enterprise environment on Vista. I really doubt that Microsoft used a domain with mandatory roaming profiles to the user in it's so called Mojave experiment. If they did the users would not be saying how great it was.

Dammit Microsoft! I really want Vista to work and to give it to my users. I really do. I know it isn't your fault that OTHER vendors can't get their software written correctly to adhere to your stringent security requirements but it SHOULD be your responsibility to ENGAGE them and assist them in getting it to work. These are not small companies I am talking about and yes most have competing products to your offerings. But bringing on the Borg attitude is not going to win you any customers and comedy is not going to make it any easier for them to deploy Vista.

Right now the Adobe problem is a project killer for us. Windows XP is looking mighty fine.

MY ADVICE TO MICROSOFT?
Save your $300 million advertising dollars and go out and use it to send a couple of code gurus around to these companies and get them to help get their code to work! You could spend half the money, donate the other half to charity and sell 10 times more product cause it would WORK!

Woohoo Citrix creates a static client url!

Posted on 7:43 AM by Unknown
I made the suggestion recently in the Citrix Communispace for Citrix to create a static redirect page to Citrix.com/clients. The marketing team listened and now you can point to this on your WI page and have your help desk direct your users to http://citrix.com/clients to get the Citrix client they need!

Score 1 for Kenzig!

Download Pick: Synctoy 2.0

Posted on 6:32 AM by Unknown
This weeks download pick is Synctoy. Microsoft has released an updated version of the Synctoy Powertoy for windows which allows you to easily sync files and folders..

Here is a list of the new features of Synctoy 2.0 from the Readme
  • Dynamic Drive Letter Assignment: Drive letter reassignment will now be detected and updated in the folder pair definition.
  • True Folder Sync: Folder creates, renames and deletes are now synchronized for all SyncToy actions.
  • Exclusion Filtering Based on Name: File exclusion based on name with exact or fuzzy matching.
  • Filtering Based on File Attributes: The ability to exclude files based on one or more file attributes (Read-Only, System, Hidden).
  • Unattended Folder Pair Execution: Addressed issues related to running scheduled folder pairs while logged off.
  • Folder Pairs With Shared Endpoints: Ability for folder pairs associated with the same or different instances of SyncToy to share end-points.
  • Command line enhancements: Added the ability to manage folder pairs via the command line interface.
  • Re-Architect Sync Engine: The SyncToy engine has been rearchitected to provide scalability and the ability to add significant enhancements in future releases.
  • Sync engine is also more robust insomuch that many single, file level errors are skipped without affecting the entire sync operation.
  • Sync Encrypted Files: Sync of Encrypted files works when local folder and files are encrypted, which addresses the common scenario involving sync between local, encrypted laptop PC folder and remote, unencrypted desktop PC folder.
  • 64-Bit Support: SyncToy now has a native 64-bit build (x64 only) for 64-bit versions of Windows.
  • Folder pair rename
  • Sub-folder Exclusion Enhancements: Descendents created under excluded sub-folders are automatically excluded. Usability improvements for the sub-folder exclusion dialog.
  • Folder Pair Metadata Moved: Folder pair metadata removed from MyDocuments to resolve any issues with server-based folder pair re-direction setup.
  • Setup Improvements: Integrated setup with single self-extracting archive file and no extra downloads if you already have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. Enabled silent install for the SyncToy Installer file (see readme.txt file for more information). Removed combine and subscribe actions.

Microsoft opens Live Mesh Preview to more users and Mobile Mesh released!

Posted on 3:41 PM by Unknown
Microsoft announced witnin the last week or so that they will be opening up the Live Mesh Tech Preview. You can sign up directly, with no waiting list, if your country/region is the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, or New Zealand.

    To sign up see
    https://www.mesh.com/Welcome/LearnMore.aspx

Paul Thurrot describes live mesh in this way "Under the Live Mesh paradigm, users create a "mesh" of interconnected devices, including PCs, Macs, various mobile devices, and a Web-based desktop. (In the current prerelease version, only PCs and the Web desktop are enabled.) You can synchronize folders (and their contents) between all of these devices, providing you with anytime-anywhere access to your data. Live Mesh also provides PC remote control functionality, so you can use your PC when away from home, for example, over the Internet."

I have been testing the service for several months. If you install Silverlight on your system you can back up all of your pictures to the Mesh "cloud" and view them as a slide show for example. As well as upload your music and play it from online Mesh folders with the silverlight plugin. Mesh lets you open Microsoft Office files directly from your online folders also.

Also of note MOBILE users can connect to their Mesh account now. See the blog entry here about Mobile Mesh

Watch out with ADOBE ACROBAT READER 9 on a domain with Vista user roaming profiles

Posted on 7:01 AM by Unknown
Update: In researching this issue I came across an AWESOME step by step for installing Adobe written by Aaron Parker, that includes an MST of the recommended settings. All I can say is Aaron, you da man!http://blog.stealthpuppy.com/deployment/deploying-adobe-reader-9-for-windows
There also is a greate admin template to set up Adobe Acrobat to work so it opens OUTSIDE the browser. I had to do two things to get Adobe Acrobat to work on Vista. Logged on as an admin, go to the Adobe reader executable on the hard disk in the program files/adobe/9.0/reader folder and right click on it and choose properties. Then choose the compatibility tab and choose set compatibility for all users and choose Windows XP SP2 from the drop down. Apply. I then had to open Adobe reader, choose edit/preferences. Click on Internet in the side menu and uncheck the open in browser box. Hope this helps.
NOTE: If you have a solution to this please post in the comment section! Thank you.
I'm putting this out there everywhere I have a presence in hopes that Adobe will get off it's butt and fix this problem. If you install Adobe 9 acrobat reader on Windows Vista on a domain and use roaming profiles for users, be it mandatory or not, Acrobat Reader will crash and will not run. It gives errors in modules annots.api and also msvcr80.dll. Note that this is NOT an IE only thing, Acrobat reader crashes when run by itself, with Firefox and Apple Safari browsers as soon as the account is set to roam.

As soon as you give the user admin priveleges the program will run. I've tried turning off UAC, still broke, I've tried running adobe reader in compatibility mode, still broke, I've tried running adobe as administrator settings still broke. I've tried changing access on adobe folders to give users full control, still broke. Giving a user administrator priveleges is NOT an acceptable solution. Further having to mess around with Dep and Windows Security features is NOT an option. If Adobe wants to play with the big boys and try to consider it's product an "industry standard" they have to write it correctly.

I am not the only one having this issue there are posts all over the internet including the below samples IN the adobe forums.
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5db5d
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5ea2a
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5c646
Citrix admins have also reported issues with it crashing and getting it to work~
    http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b5f923
However I did find an installation script for Adobe 9 on Citrix
here Though I have not tested this so I do not know if it works.
My recommondation is don't install Adobe Acrobat 9 in a Vista domain until Adobe addresses this issue!
NOTE: Local non admin user profiles CAN run Adobe. If you make it a roaming one that is when you have issues.

Citrix Provisioning Server 5.0 (Project Charles) enters Release Candidate Status

Posted on 5:54 PM by Unknown

Well I am now allowed to blog about the upcoming release of Citrix Provisioning Server 5.0.

Quickly though if you don't know what Citrix Provisioning Server is or does, take a look at this video. The video shows 150 desktops being provisioned with Windows XP, then changed to Windows Server, different versions of Linux and Vista instantly with a few mouse clicks. Which a better quality version can be downloaded from here to justify buying it to your boss. (note I suggest you right click on the above link and choose save target as and save the video to your local drive to view it)

Provisioning Server is also the magic behind Citrix Xenserver. So it is good idea to start learning about it if you want to use it to provison your servers.

I have been beta testing this product for several weeks and can tell you that it is spectacularly different than the 4.5 (1.0) product that Citrix purchased from Ardence and renamed.

Version 5.0 can be considered a grown up version of the 4.5 (really 1.0) product! While PVS 1.0 was a simple click install with few choices in the console for changing things and proprietary vdisk, version 5.0 begins to build standards and look like a product that is truly ready for the enterprise!

PVS 5.0 Datacenter version adds management improvements such as Role Based Administration that grant admin access rights based on Active directory group membership. Farm partitioning is available that allows the management of large server farms with the ability to group several provisioning server hosts, servers and vdisks into separately managed sites.

And the best part the new UI is a Microsoft Management console Snap in that lets you integrate PVS with your existing mmc's!

New in this version is the ability to use Microsoft Virtual Hard disks (VHD) for the vdisk and also customers can use Microsoft SQL Server for the backend database. There is also Windows 2008 streaming functionality that enables provisioning of physical and virtual W2K8 servers including the ability to stream Microsoft Hyper V to bare metal servers making it possible to dynamically configure servers to run a single, dedicated workload or be virtualized to run multiple workloads.

For a sneak peak at the console click here

PVS 5 introduces the concept of sites and stores. Stores are A logical name given to a physical storage location for vDisks. The store is used by all Provisioning Servers within a farm to refer to a shared storage location.

Sites is a container that groups a vDisk Pool, PVS Servers and Device Collection. A site can represent a physical or logical location… Citrix designed the GUI so you the administrator can create a hierarchy that makes sense to you!

The addition of sites and stores give administrators the flexibility to set up multiple PVS in multiple sites and locations and use multiple storage areas.

PVS 5 also introduces High Availability options among many other great new features.

As I test and learn more I will post here.

There seems to be a PVS 5 at Citrix here and Here is Pete Downing's video Gus Pinto recorded from a few months back at Citrix Synergy talking about PVS 5.0
