Bug Pushes Vista Release to November 8th!

Posted on 7:03 AM by Unknown
Computerworld is reporting that due to a bug in the Windows Vista code that last weeks release was postponed and new date to release to manufacturing is set for November 8th.

The article goes on to state that the Business release will barely make the end of November.

As long as it is available when we go to buy new machines when we have money early next year..I'll be happy.

By the way I have been doing a lot of reading and research about the way Vista handles Group Policies and their templates. Vista uses something called an ADMX file instead of an ADM template. The ADMX file is XML based and contains hundreds more policy settings. Apparently though if you want to use these policies on your 2000/2003 Server you will only be able to do so by using a Vista workstation to control and set them.

Look for my upcoming next blog entry and story at thinhelp.com to discuss how this will all work.

New Server Based Computing Search Available from ThinHelp

Posted on 6:55 AM by Unknown

Hi All,
I have used the new Google Co-Op service to create a custom Server Based Computing specific search on all of the top websites in the SBC industry.
I have placed almost 100 sites into this search including all of the Microsoft MVP's and Citrix CTP's web sites, Blogs from industry experts and key website KB's.

Check out the search at http://www.F1U.com!

Citrix Escalation Engineer, Sam Johnston has take things a step further and created a custom Citrix search and included the search from F1U into his, here is his announcement on it!

==========================

Morning all,

I've just finished putting the final touches on Citrites' Search (
http://citrites.org) which supersedes the existing Citrite.org ( http://citrite.org) search function, combining Google AJAX Search, Google Co-op Search and Google Enterprise Search (for those detected as internal users only, sorry) to give an extremely fast and flexible tabbed interface. citrites.org (plural) was registered about a month ago to complement citrite.org with a search service but until now the existing sitesearch functionality did not provide enough flexibility (the old form at http://citrite.org/search/ is clunky at best).

Citrites' Search currently searches the following information:
  • Citrix Sites: Content from scores of Citrix related sites, including citrix.com and citrite.org.
  • Support: The official Citrix Knowledge Center site: support.citrix.com
  • Forums: Various forums including the official forums at support.citrix.com/forums.
  • Citrites: Blogs of Citrix employees and alumni (Citrites' Blogs).
  • Citrix.com: All citrix.com content via Google
  • Blog: All blogs via Google's Blog Search
  • News: All news via Google News search.
  • Web: The entire web via traditional Google.
  • Video: All video content via Google Video search.
Rather than reinvent the wheel I've plugged Jim's excellent co-op search ( http://www.f1u.com/) into the left panel in place of my own and have a number of other custom coop searches driving the various tabs (the cooperative nature of this product is really quite powerful). I also have refinements set up to isolate documentation, etc. but unfortunately these are not exposed through the AJAX interface as yet.

If you're running Mozilla Firefox 2 or Internet Explorer 7 (as you should be) you can integrate Citrites' Search seamlessly into the browser by clicking on the link (an OpenSearch Description) at
http://citrites.org/opensearch/

I'll be promoting this internally too (primarily for use by Citrix Technical Support) and the more people using and contributing (even if just via feedback) the better it will be. I'm convinced that decent search is going to change the way we work internally and there's no reason it shouldn't help customers and partners too,

Kind regards,

Sam

Kenzig Given Plaque of Appreciation at Thin Dinner

Posted on 5:46 AM by Unknown
Well it was totally unexpected and very nicely done. Doug Brown along with Steve Greenberg and Tim Mangan gave me a very nice plaque at the Thin List dinner, in appreciation for all of my 10 years of "dedication" to the thin computing community. If I posted the text of it you would all roll your eyes back into your head. LOL
It really is hard to believe that I have been doing this that long and it makes me feel really old... : ) but I guess now I have a plaque to prove it. Below is a pick pulled from the hundreds I've taken at Citrix iForum. I have placed a link in the right column so they are easier for you to find.

All I can say is that I am deeply humbled by this wish to thank Doug, Steve and Tim for their thoughtfulness.
I would also like to thank Doug and Steve for covering my dinner and special thanks to Greg Reese who put the whole thing together this year, 2000 miles away from the Marshall Islands.

Here is the text from the plaque. Doug is so creative... they also gave me a burned edges parchment version of it that they all signed!
"We the People of the worldwide Server Based Computing Community present this award to Jim Kenzig in recognition of his outstanding contribution to foster the sharing and exchange of ideas, best practices, and technical suppor to thousands of people worldwide. For the creation of a powerful on line community and for his tireless effort to provide relevant and timely information, we offer our thanks. This token of our appreciation is presented on October 23rd at Citrix Iforum in Orlando, Florida 2006"

Yes it really says all that : ) ... thanks again guys.

Subject: ICSWEEP - Windows\ Citrix\ Terminal Server Utility

Sorry for the flood of apps everyone, but I've written 4 utilities in a week, and I think there all helpful in some way to our Thin Admins out there.

Here's a handy little app that has been getting rave reviews since I wrote it.

Follow the link to download:

http://www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au/CAD_Utils.htm

ICSWEEP is a command-line utility to clear the Temporary Internet Files cache
of ALL user profiles that are NOT in use when this command is executed.
This utility was written for the purpose of allowing a SINGLE command to
identify and clear Temporary Internet Files cache of ALL user profiles
currently NOT in use. This tool could be simply run from the command
line at any time, or added as a SCHEDULED TASK for regular cleaning of
user profiles, reducing the overall size of a profile and saving disk space
for locally based profiles.

ICSWEEP will only function when executed by a user with ADMIN rights to the
profile directory.

Usage:
ICSweep [/?]

/?   -   show this help file
No other parameters are required by this program.

The program returns a running list of the processed profiles. To store the
output run the following command: ICSWEEP.EXE>ICSWEEP.txt

This utility is FREEWARE and was written by Warren Simondson of
Ctrl-Alt-Del IT Consultancy , Australia . www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au

Although written for Terminal Server and Citrix environments, this application
will function on non-TS/Citrix workstations and servers.
This application has been tested on the following platforms:

Windows 2003 Server SP1
Windows 2003 Server SP1 w/ Citrix PS 4.0
Windows 2003  Server SP1 (Terminal Server Application Mode)

The freeware version is offered AS IS. Ctrl-Alt-Del IT Consultancy has made
every effort possible to ensure that ICSWEEP is free of any bugs or errors,
however in no way is ICSWEEP to be considered error or bug free.
You assume all responsibility for any damages or lost data that may result
from any errors or bugs in ICSWEEP.

IN NO EVENT WILL CTRL-ALT-DEL IT CONSULTANCY BE LIABLE TO YOU FOR ANY GENERAL,

Jim

I know you’re all having fun at iForum but here’s a HOT new app for Citrix and Terminal Server:

Follow the link to download:

TSWhereIs is a command-line tool to locate a user within a Domain

administrators to find if a user has a session on a TS or Citrix server

and if so, display the server name, session type, client IP, etc...

Ctrl-Alt-Del IT Consultancy , Australia . www.ctrl-alt-del.com.au

Thankyou to the WINDOWS SDK available from http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads

UserName   -   identifies username needed for the search

                 (NOT case sensitive)

Citrix iForum 2006 Kicked off tonight

Posted on 6:31 PM by Unknown

Hello all,
Citrix iForum 2006 in Orlando kicked off tonight with an opening night reception... I perused the conference hall for trinkets and looking for the usual sponsors. Of course a lot of them were not to be found (except the usual thin client ones)as Citrix has either acquired them or acquired "like" technologies and not invited them back. I'll need some extra time in the hall to talk to people before I start doing reviews, but at this point none of the noncitrix vendors has really got me excited about anything. I sure hope that changes tomorrow!

My presentation at CSEIT today went very well and hopefully will be posted in the Citrix KB soon. I think I took them all by suprise with the music and handing out dollar bills to people but at least I had fun. Something I want to remind the people who are doing presentations:

Acknowledge your audience, do not talk AT them talk to them. Doing the last presentation at CSEIT and practicing this myself I sort of threw the audience off guard because they got used to be talked AT instead of being talked to. I can tell you that every one of the people in my presentation this morning will remember being there. Citrix folks remember this and you will have an awesome worthwile memorable presentation no matter what you are presenting on. I hope this will get passed on to those doing presentations throughout the conference.

And I started taking the usual pictures and they are now uploaded at http://picasaweb.google.com/jkenzig/CitrixIforum2006

Go check them out... more tomorrow on the breakouts and such.

Citrix CSEIT Review Day 1 Presentations

Posted on 2:03 PM by Unknown

Hanging out here in sunny 80 degree Orlando today at the Citrix CSEIT. I took a lot of pictures, seemed like no one else was and asked the probing questions as I always do. It took me til after the conference was over though to figure out why my newfangled camera was blurring all the images, a total reset was in order. Rest of them ought to come out great.. Click on the Picture below to view the entire web album.
From cseit

At any rate there were 6 breakout sessions today and I attended 4 of them. I skipped the one on printing and saw Jeff Pitschs at Briforum, I instead took the time to to write this before I head off to downtown Disney.

The first session I attended was given by Kapildev Ramlal and Tim Card of Citrix. This one was on IMA Internals.
There was lots of good stuff here and the guys did a good job keeping the audience interested. They got down to the nitty gritty of the Citrix Local host cache (LHC)and pointed out a command I had not heard of before called DSMAINT VERIFYLHC /AUTOREPAIR and a utility called LHCSizer which counts the number of records in the LHC.

Want to see the tables in the Citrix datastore (ds) type in queryds /tables They noted the queryds command is case sensitive and is an issue where most admins don't know this. They pointed out the dscheck /clean command to detect and correct data store errors (careful with this command though)

One issue they ran over was when the IMA service fails to start. One solution was to make sure that the ipsec service is enable.

Citrix has released an IMA timeout fix for PS4 it is PSE400W2K3009 which is part of W2k3R02. The guys has so much to present that they ran out of time and did not get to the part of the presentation on the Medevac tool chich is a utility to simulate ica client browsing to test the XML services, ima and RPC functionality. It would of been good to hear this as I have heard a lot about this tool but never played with it.

Next Elisabeth Teixeira and Jamie Baker did a presentation on Citrix Application Isolation Environments. (AIE) To their merit the hit the key points but it is such a convuloted and difficult thing to understand for such a simple idea. (does that make any sense?) I really don't care how it all works... I just want an easy way to do it! Give me a wizard for my app. Ask me in a wizard how it normally runs...what it did when I tried to publish it regular way and then fix the problem and publish it for me so it works. It is just too convoluted and given the choice I would just set up a separate citrix vm for just that app and publish it on that single server and be done with it. I dont have the time to research and figure out what every app I publish does or how it works... I just want to do it. Will we ever get there? Anyways I think this might of gone into a little bit too much technical content for the crowd...they did know their stuff though.

Vishal Ganeriwala and Merdardus Clont presented on the MFCOM and WI SDK (isn't it called the CTXCOM or something like that now?)
Anyways they showed some good basic things you can do with these tools and how you could for example customize your WI site... I have a much easier way though and it is called use word and save as html to edit the include files. I'll give them an A- for effort though.

I skipped Jamie Baker and Nicholas Vasile of Citrix presentation on printing. I am tired of hearing of printing problems. I really haven't had any since I switched to CPS 4... it is basically fixed if you set your systems up correctly. Besides after 7 years of iforums with printing presentations and how it works I just couldn't sit through another. Sorry guys.. I am sure the newbs got a lot out of it though.

Christian Paller gave an interesting presentation following up about CTX106727 troubleshooting guide they started. Now Citrix has release CTX107572 http://support.citrix.com/article/CTX107572&printable=true the Troubleshooting tools for Citrix Environments document
Citrix has hit a homerun with this one which is a single point of reference for all important troubleshooting tools for citrix from around the web.
The idea is to create a single KB article that summarizes the sources and what you would use them for.
I was dismayed that the Thin list and its archives(http://www.freelists.org/list/thin ) was not reccomended as a resource I have been posting a download pick of the week on it for 9 years+ running now and it is a great resource a nd tool for getting answers. In fact I am surprised when I do a google search for an issue if a post from the Thin list is not in the top ten results. : ) It is that good of a resource.

And of course there is my new dowloads site at http://www.thinhelp.com/ and all of the old http://thin.net/ utilities are still out there on the msterminalservices.org site and the ones that aren't have been sent to doug for posting at dabcc. Ok off my soapbox about me... I did suggest though that a link to the above article be posted prominently on the dowloads page at Mycitrix.com (that is if you can find the new downloads page, they had to make a video of where they are now with the new version of mycitrix but that is another story. I give 2 snaps and kudos to Chris and to Citrix for acknowledging that there are other great utilities out in the world (most of them free) that can help solve issues with their product. It was a great presentation.

Jeff Pitsch's presentation on Session Security was pretty much the same he gave at Briforum this past year You can see the video of it over on Brians site at http://www.brianmadden.com/content/content.asp?ID=517

So that's it for day one on the presentation server side of things for CSEIT. I'll blog about day 2 tommorow. My presentation is the last of the group. I have been told the presentations will be posted in the Citrix KB. I'll send along a link when they are.

Have a good one...
Jim

Todays Tip: Are you using WSUS/SUS and your Windows XP systems get stuck saving settings?

Posted on 12:51 PM by Unknown
Hi Folks,
Been dealing with Error event ID 454 in our event logs on our Windows XP SP2 machines and then they get stuck on saving settings when you try to log them off for quite some time. The only way to get rid of it is to shut the things down by hand.  If Windows update doesn't work for you this fix will help also.

I found this obscure posting out on the web that suggested reregistering a dll on the system.  I have to admit I was skeptical but it appears to have resolved the issue. So here are the steps.

Go to a command prompt and type

regsvr32 msxml3.dll

That is it.  Workstations should log off much quicker now.  Apparantly this dll gets corrupted or unregistered for some reason. If you add a /s the box won't pop up saying it is registered so you can do this on a script.  We pushed it out via Altiris today and XP machines seem to be much happier.

Citrix Posts CTP Page / Blogging Site

Posted on 2:33 PM by Unknown
Citrix is stepping up to the plate in response to Brian Maddens posting back in July about Thought Leadership at http://www.brianmadden.com/content/content.asp?ID=607

They have created a Citrix Technology Professional Program (CTP) with a page about it at:
http://www.citrix.com/English/ps2/products/feature.asp?contentID=38494

and now have an official blogging Community page of Citrites at:
http://citrixcommunity.com/Default.aspx

Pat on the back to Brian for lighting the fire. This is all good stuff!

One blog that I have found extremely helpful is Jay Tomlins.  A recent post on Web Interface completely solved a problem that I have been maddeningly try to figure out for months.  The issue at the end of his posting on the Web Garden Number in the app pool setting was it! Mine was set at 10! Thanks Jay...
Here is the link to the posting which is on why you get the Redirect message when you go to Web Interface... it is a good read!

DesktopStandard Corporation Is Acquired by Microsoft

Posted on 6:55 PM by Unknown
Check out this recent press release! Expect to see some goodness as far as GPO's go from Microsoft now!
Jim

DesktopStandard Corporation Is Acquired by Microsoft
Customers can continue to purchase DesktopStandard products

Portsmouth, NH - October 2, 2006 – DesktopStandard Corporation, a leading developer of Group Policy-based enterprise desktop management products, today announced it has been acquired by Microsoft Corp. The addition of DesktopStandard demonstrates Microsoft’s commitment to help customers leverage the value of policy-based management and maximize the value of their investments in Microsoft Active Directory.

“Joining with Microsoft will allow DesktopStandard to more quickly meet our goal of helping customers extend Group Policy to handle the majority of their distributed management tasks and to provide a more manageable environment for doing so,” said DesktopStandard’s CTO and cofounder Eric Voskuil, who will join Microsoft’s Windows Enterprise Management Division in the role of Software Architect. “Customers will benefit now and into the future as our innovative team joins Microsoft in building the future of model-based policy management technologies.”

DesktopStandard was chosen by Microsoft to supplement its Group Policy technology because of DesktopStandard’s:
  • Experience in policy-based management and tight integration with native Group Policy
  • Mature, Award-winning products that are proven in deployments
  • Broad and loyal customer base
  • Talented employees who are motivated to help customers succeed
“DesktopStandard products are already seamlessly integrated with Microsoft Group Policy and are completely complementary with Microsoft technology,” said Larry Orecklin, General Manager, Microsoft’s Windows Enterprise Management Division “This acquisition enhances our ability to meet customers’ needs to perform Group Policy lifecycle management, consolidate the number of policy objects being managed, and increase desktop management functionality.”

DesktopStandard will continue to operate as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Microsoft while the DesktopStandard technology is transitioned to Microsoft. Customers can continue to purchase GPOVault®, ProfileMaker, PolicyMaker™ Standard Edition and Share Manager from DesktopStandard and existing partners. ProfileMaker will be available only from existing DesktopStandard partners. Microsoft will continue to support customers according to the terms and conditions of existing agreements. Microsoft is not acquiring the PolicyMaker™ Application Security business.

PolicyMaker™ Application Security will be exclusively available from BeyondTrust™ Corporation, formerly a wholly-owned subsidiary of DesktopStandard. BeyondTrust is focused on enterprise security products that eliminate the need for security administrators to place trust in computers or users. BeyondTrust will continue to develop, sell and support PolicyMaker Application Security under the product name, BeyondTrust™ Privilege Manager.

John Moyer, DesktopStandard’s CEO and cofounder, states, “It is an exciting opportunity to move forward with BeyondTrust at a time when organizations are focused on increasing protection from zero-hour exploits, data theft, and unauthorized malicious use.” Moyer will be joining BeyondTrust in the position of CEO. “By enabling the security best practice of Least Privilege with BeyondTrust Privilege Manager organizations find that they not only achieve these security goals, but also increase business productivity and regulatory compliance.”
